'Lone Cypress' was painted 'en plein air' (outside, on location) at Point Lobos State Reserve, just south of Monterey, Ca. I was on an art sabbatical along the entire stretch of the Central Coast, spending hours and hours traveling, camping, surfing and painting outdoors. When I was preparing to leave for my big adventure, I was packing art supplies, and decided to throw this long wood panel in the mix (to paint on). At about 15" x 5", it's an unusual format, and I thought it would be perfect for a wide, sweeping vista. No better place then Point Lobos! This was painted at Cypress Cove, where a lone, windblown Cypress tree clung to the side of the cliff, overlooking the most pristine and rugged coast.
